TULSA, Okla. – The Seminoles took the courts in the first round of the Qualifying singles draw at the ITA All-American Championships Monday. The Florida State men’s tennis team walked away with two of five Seminoles reaching the second round of play. The Seminoles are one of the top four teams in the nation by having nine selections in the qualifying draws of both singles and doubles.
No. 100 Benjamin Lock won his first round qualifying draw singles match with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Matthew Kirby of Tulsa. The sophomore takes on Nikita Fomin of George Washington Tuesday at 9:00 a.m.
“I was also pleased with Benjamin’s win over a Tulsa player on home turf,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “I thought he played well and started quick to control the match. I think the other thing we are looking forward to is seeing eight guys competing tomorrow and get good wins.”
Sophomore Dominic Cotrone, who reached the Qualifying Draw by winning four matches in three days, competed against Rafael Davidian of Utah. Cotrone won 6-4, 6-4 and takes on No. 92 Ben Davis of Tulsa at 11:30 a.m.
“I was really pleased that Dominic could come back after playing his fourth match in three days,” continued Hultquist. “To get a win in a solid performance is impressive. He held serve 10 times today, five each set, and was fortunate to get a break late in the second. It was a solid win.”
In doubles, the only duo not to receive a first round bye is senior Andres Bucaro and Lock. The duo takes on North Carolina’s Esben Hess-Olsen and Nelson Vick at 4 p.m. Senior Jordan Kelly-Houston and freshman Michael Rinaldi square off in the second round against the winner of a first round winner at 5:30 p.m.
Also in the second round is redshirt-freshman João Gauer and sophomore Cristian Gonzalez Mendez take on SMU’s Artus Kazijev and Mischa Nowiki at 4 p.m. Closing out the Seminoles play is Cotrone and senior Anderson Reed at 4:30 p.m. against Nebraska’s Sebastian Florvzyk and Marc Herman.
Singles quarterfinalists, doubles finalists and consolation champions will receive an automatic entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in November.
