Loren Smith grew up on the diamond, both of them. She started out as a pitcher in baseball before switching to softball.

"I played until eighth grade year, so freshman year of high school was my first year of softball," says Smith, a rising senior outfielder on the FSU softball team. "My coach didn't let me try out. I had no intentions of playing softball."

Loren has found a way to revive her love for baseball. She has earned a spot to compete at the U.S. Women's Baseball National Team Trials at the end of the month.

"When I first got back into it, it was tough because I had not pitched since I was in eighth grade and I was a lot shorter and the mound is farther," Loren adds.

Should Loren make the roster it will be her third summer playing for Team USA. Two year ago she played in the Women's Baseball World cup in Venezuela, and last year took part in an International Friendship Series.

"When we first heard about getting Loren to our program and that she had been with the U.S. Women's baseball team for the last couple of years, we thought that could be a bonus," adds FSU softball assistant coach Travis Wilson. "She's been in competitive environment, playing a game pretty similar to softball."

"I know what I have to work on to get to where I want to be and that's what I'm working on right now. I feel like I am a better player now then what I was in 2010."

The trails will be held at the University of Utah. The world cup will be held in Edmonton, Alberta, August 10th through the 19th.
