Olympia Fields, IL - The No. 13 Florida State men’s golf team came into the Fighting Illini Invitational to test the freshmen and head coach Trey Jones got the answer with freshmen Jack Maguire finishing tied for sixth at the damp Olympia Fields Country Club.
“Jack had an impressive debut into college golf,” said Jones. “I am proud of the way he handled himself on a difficult golf course; you can’t fake it around here.”
The St. Petersburg, Fla., native had a strong final round with a 2-over 72 in rain including birdies on the eighth and 11th hole. He finished the tournament with a 4-over 214.
The team finished with a three day total of a 41-over 881 after carding their lowest score, a 291 11-over third round. The team now has three weeks to get ready for their next tournament.
“We came here to identify strengths and expose weaknesses and we did that,” continued Jones. “This team has potential but is not where we need to be if we are going to compete at the level we are accustomed to competing. While we didn’t finish as high as we wanted, there were enough good things to build on. Our teams have a history of improving as the year progresses and it appears these guys have the desire and discipline to improve.”
Freshmen Josh Lee of Orange Park, Fla., had a rough start on the day with a 5-over on the front nine, but finished the back nine even. With a three day 11-over 221, he finished tied for 29th. Redshirt freshmen Cristobal Del Solar finished close behind Lee with a 14-over 224 to tie for 45th.
The team needed the upperclassmen to step it up today and sophomore Collin Engelhardt answered that with his best round of collegiate golf by posting an even par 70. He moved up 21 spots today to finish tied for 50th with a 16-over 226. Sophomore Hank Lebioda finished tied for 53rd with a 17-over 227.
No. 1 Alabama held onto the lead to win the tournament while Robby Shelton of Alabama and Cameron Wilson of Stanford shared the individual title with 210 even par scores.
