Tallahassee, FL - The No. 27 Florida State men’s tennis team (4-0, 0-0) travels to play three matches on the west coast. First for the Seminoles is a bout with the back-to-back NCAA Champions and second-ranked USC on Wednesday. Following the match, the team stays in Los Angeles to compete in the ITA Kick-0ff Weekend, which is the first and second rounds of the ITA Indoor Championships.
Florida State is coming off a weekend where the team went undefeated to improve its record to 4-0. This is the first time since 2008 the team has started with four consecutive wins. The ‘Noles are highlighted by No. 37 Clint Bowles (Tampa, Fla.), who went undefeated this past weekend, and No. 42 Vahid Mirzadeh (Wellington, Fla.),who is in the midst of a five match winning streak. He and his doubles partner Connor Smith (Tampa, Fla.) are starting the season strong by doing undefeated in doubles play.
The sophomore Smith is played singles well right now and holds a 6-1 record this spring. Freshman Blake Davis (Austin, Texas) is also off to a good start holding a 3-0 record on court four during dual match play.
Wednesday’s 1:30 p.m. PT match with USC will mark the first match between the two schools. USC has a strong team with five of their players ranked in the singles top 100 and two ranked doubles partners.
Florida State will face No. 28 Fresno State on Friday, January 28 at 10:00 a.m. PT. The only time the two teams have faced one another was in 2005 when Florida State took the 4-1 victory. Fresno State has the No. 69 singles player in Remi Boutillier and the No. 21 doubles team in Boutillier and Rikus de Villiers.
The winner of the bout between Florida State and Fresno State will face the winner of No. 6 UCLA and No. 33 Minnesota. The winners will play at 3:00 p.m. PT while the consolation match will be at 6:00 p.m. PT. UCLA defeated Florida State 4-0 in the round of 16 at the 2008 NCAA tournament, which is the only time the two teams have met. The Seminoles hold a 4-0 record over Minnesota but have not played each other since 1973.
