TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 27 Florida State men’s tennis team starts its home season on January 18th against No. 62 Troy University. The Seminoles will begin play at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Admission is free for all matches.
“It’s always good to start your first match of the season on your own territory,” said senior Vahid Mirzadeh. “It gives us a ton of confidence and comfort having the fans rally behind us. Every time we can gather a crowd out there on Speicher, it’s a definite advantage for us that we all enjoy.”
Florida State holds a 2-0 record against Troy. The teams first meet in 1948, in the Seminoles first season, where they won 8-1. The teams last meet in 1999 when Florida State won 5-2.
The Seminoles have senior Clint Bowles (Tampa, Fla.) ranked No. 37 in the nation in singles and Mirzadeh (Wellington, Fla.) at No. 42 in singles. Sophomore Connor Smith (Tampa, Fla.) is coming off of a 5-1 record at the Illini Open last weekend to be ranked No. 20 in the Southeast region by the ITA.
The Seminoles played last week at the Illini Open in Sarasota, Fla., where in addition to Smith, Mirzadeh finished the weekend with a 4-2 combined record in singles and doubles. Sophomores Anderson Reed (Daphne, Ala.) and Andres Bucaro (Guatemala City, Guatemala) also finished the tournament with a 4-2 record.
