Tallahassee, FL - The NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Subcommittee selected 64 singles players and 32 doubles teams to compete in the 2011 NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Championships. The singles and doubles competition will be conducted May 25-30 at the Taube Tennis Center in Stanford, Calif., following the conclusion of the team championships.
For the third time in his career, senior Vahid Mirzadeh (Wellington, Fla.) will compete at the tournament. For sophomore Connor Smith (Tampa, Fla.), although he was named an alternative in doubles play in last year’s tournament, this will be his first time competing at the tournament.
“We are really excited to be in the individual tournament,” said Smith. “It’s a great opportunity and we have been working hard every day. Hopefully we can get out there and make a run.”
“It’s a good honor to be making the individuals in singles and doubles with Connor,” said Mirzadeh. “I’ll be looking forward to the opportunity but hopefully that won’t come for a while so we make a good run in the team competition. When that moment come I’ll be ready to play some good tennis.”
Mirzadeh is currently ranked No. 25 in the nation and received an at-large selection in singles. In doubles play, he and Smith received an at-large selection as the No. 13 duo in the nation.
Mirzadeh competed in doubles with former ‘Noles Jean-Yves Aubone in the 2009 championship and the singles draw last year. Mirzadeh and Smith were named as doubles alternatives last year but did not play.
