Tallahassee, FL - The past seven months for Maurice Mitchell has been one long sprint.
"I got married in December and then my wife got pregnant in March. Then I made the Olympic team, graduated," he said. "So I mean a lot of things have happened."
The 22-year-old Mitchell, who graduated from FSU in May, didn't realize his Olympic potential until his junior year when he won an NCAA title.
"In 2011 when I won NCAAs and went to USAs and got fourth at USAs out of lane one, I started to realize like 'look, I can actually make the Olympic team next year,'" he said.
Right now the Missouri native is racing to raise enough money so his entire family can join him in London.
"I'm trying to get my wife to come to London," he said. "My mom and dad might show up, I'm not sure. They're doing a huge fundraiser in Missouri called the Mitchell Fund."
When he gets to the 2012 games, Mitchell plans on cashing in with gold.
"I'm still soaking it in," he said. "You know, it's just, wow. Like it's just wierd people calling me Olympian. Everybody congratulating me. It's just exciting."
Mitchell plans on competing in a warmup race in Monaco, France before he heads to London on July 26.
