LONDON, England- Head Swimming and Diving coach Neil Harper added major talent in and out of the pool for the 2012-13 season as he announced the acquisition of Gideon Louw as a graduate assistant earlier this week.

Louw is currently representing South Africa at the 2012 London Olympics where he led off the fifth place finishing 4x100 free relay and took ninth in the individual 100 free in the first few days of competition.

His Olympics aren’t over as he’s slated to anchor the 4x100 medley relay in addition to the 50 free, where he will look to improve on his semifinal appearance in the event in the 2008 Beijing Games.

“Gideon’s NCAA, Olympic and International experience and knowledge will provide great leadership and confidence for this season.” Harper said.

Louw spent 2008-2010 with Auburn University where he was a six-time All-American, three-time NCAA and SEC Champion as a member of the sprint and 200 medley relays for the Tigers.

The Pretoria, South Africa native wasn’t the only major addition in the graduate assistant role. Also joining the staff in a graduate assistant role will be Matt Patton from the University of Michigan.

As a member of the distance tradition at Michigan, Patton placed seventh at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 400 free and he took ninth in the 1500 free and 14th in the 200 fly this summer.

While a Wolverine, Patton finished out his career in 2009 as a six-time All-American with two additional All-America honorable mentions, an eight-time Big Ten Champion and a member of the 2007 U.S. Pan- Pacific Team. He was also a member of the U.S. National Team.

“I am extremely excited for our team and staff that Gideon and Matt wanted to study their Masters Degrees at Florida State,” Harper said. “They were both Academic All Americans and their choice of Florida State speaks highly of our nationally ranked Sports Management and Exercise Science programs. These two men have had unbelievable success at the NCAA and International levels. They are very well known in the swimming world and are respected and very well liked for their class, intellect and dedication. They will be a huge boost to the confidence and experience they can impart and share with this year’s talented team."

Louw will be enrolled in the master program of Exercise Science and Patton will study Sport Management.
