Noles Open Season At Thomasville Collegiate Invitational

Thomasville, GA- The Seminoles started the fall season today by sending four members of the Florida State men’s tennis team to the 7th Annual Thomasville Collegiate Invitational at the Glen Arven Country Club. The ‘Noles sent senior transfer Jason Zafiros, juniors Andres Bucaro and Anderson Reed and freshman Dominic Cotrone (Bradenton, Fla.).

Reed started his day with a bout against Tammo Haake of Valdosta State. He won that match 6-2, 6-1 and then took on FAMU’s Temuera Asafu-Adjaye. With a 6-0, 6-1 win, the Daphne, Ala., native will play in the semifinals at 10:00 a.m against No. 1 seed Luis Loeffler of Valdosta State.

“I’m excited to get the fall season started off in the right way,” said Reed. “I took some much needed time off early in the summer and now I am ready to get back to work. I have started off strong and hopefully things continue to go that way for myself and the team.”

In his first match donning the garnet and gold, Zafiros defeated the No. 3 seed Daniel Leitner of South Alabama where he won 6-4, 6-2. Following that match, the Bradenton, Fla., native faced Konstantin Kutschenko of Valdosta State. He took Kutschenko to a tiebreaker but lost 6-4, 5-7, 10-8.

Bucaro (Guatemala City, Guatemala) faced Sebastian Jasyk of Valdosta State where he played in a close tiebreaker but ultimately lost 3-6, 6-4, 11-9. He later played Blake Gregor of South Alabama in which he won 6-3, 6-0.

Also making his debut for the Seminoles was Cotrone. In his first match the Bradenton, Fla., native defeated South Alabama’s Sebastian Kirmse 6-3, 6-1. Following his match, he faced Loeffler and lost 6-3, 6-2.

The ‘Noles return to the courts tomorrow and will conclude play on Sunday. Admission to the tournament is free. The courts are located at 1700 Old Monticello Rd. in Thomasville.
