Tallahassee, FL - Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder has distinguished himself as a leader academically, athletically and with great humility throughout his Florida State football career. Beyond the field, the fifth-year senior’s civic-minded and socially conscious efforts have helped define him as one of the most well-rounded players in the program’s history.

It is the reason Ponder has been selected as one of 10 finalists for the Awards and Recognition Association (ARA) 2010 Sportsmanship Award. He was selected from the largest group of nominees in the six-year history of the award.

Candidates for the award must be starters or significant contributors; be in good academic standing; demonstrate respect for competitors, school, teammates and coaches; show an ability to accept victory and defeat graciously; convey a high degree of humility and integrity; and demonstrate commitment in the classroom and to the community.

“We are thrilled to be part of this groundswell of excitement over the power of sportsmanship,” said B.J. Bailey, president of ARA. “As the only national award that recognizes an athlete’s character and leadership as it translates to sportsmanship, the ARA Sportsmanship Award was created six years ago to shed light on these positive traits.”

The other finalists for the award are:
• Sam Acho, University of Texas
• Corbin Bryant, Northwestern University
• Jordan Gafford, Miami University
• Scott Lewis, St. Francis University
• Chima Nwachukwu, Washington State University
• Tyler Replogle, Indiana University
• Dominik Riley, University of Memphis
• Chris Stewart, University of Notre Dame
• John Stokes, Vanderbilt University

Previous award winners include Kansas State’s Jeron Mastrud(2009), Northwestern’s Eric Peterman (2008), Washington State’s Alex Brink (2007), Rutgers’ Brian Leonard (2006) and Memphis’ DeAngelo Williams (2005).
