Tallahassee, FL - With the 2011 season approaching fast, Florida State University indoor volleyball fans have an opportunity to become part of a new student section called “Poole and The Gang,” modeled after current head coach Chris Poole and derived from the famous R&B funk band Kool and The Gang.

“The fans at our matches can make such a difference and really swing the momentum,” Poole said. “In a sport like volleyball you see it so often where fan support can really help sway the outcome. Since my staff and I have been here we’ve seen some tremendous fan support and have won some big matches at home.

“With this student section, we’re hoping to continue our great fan support. With the current renovations going on at Tully Gym, I think our fans will really enjoy the new look and changes to the facility. We’re hoping to make this student section a tradition down the road and enhance our match-day atmosphere even more.”

Membership advantages to the group include a free FSU volleyball T-shirt, reserved seating for matches at Tully Gym and other perks throughout the season. The Seminoles are expecting another strong year and host several intriguing opponents at home, including reigning Elite Eight participant Duke, Kentucky, North Carolina, Virginia Tech and Tulsa.

One of the top matches this season comes against conference rival Miami as Tully Gym will be the site of an ESPNU contest between the two in-state foes. Match time for the Seminoles and Hurricanes is at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 14.

With seven of its 12 home opponents being 2010 NCAA Tournament teams, FSU will need to ride the momentum of its fans throughout the season. The band Kool and The Gang is known for several of its memory-sticking hits back in the 1970s and early 1980s, including arguably its greatest hit “Celebrate,” which is played at several sporting contests after the home team has earned a victory.
