DADE CITY, Fla. – The No. 16 Florida State men’s golf team sits in fifth place after the first round of the USF Invitational at the Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club with a 5-over 293. The team is back six strokes from the first place team. Sophomore Daniel Berger is leading the Seminoles and sits in a tie for eighth. The team tees off at 9:50 a.m. on Monday.
“We were not very sharp today,” started head coach Trey Jones. “We made some aggressive plays on the par five’s and didn’t execute around the greens. Other than Daniel (Berger) we only had one birdie on the front nine from our other four players. The slope and speed of the greens mandate you leave the ball below the hole in order to stay aggressive. We did not put ourselves in enough of these positions today.”
Sophomore Daniel Berger started strong with a 3-under front nine and finished the day with a 1-under 71. The Jupiter, Fla., native currently sits in a tie for eighth place.
Senior Doug Letson is tied for 16th place after a 1-over 73 after four birdies on day one. Freshman Hank Lebioda is tied for 22nd after turning in a 2-over 74 in the first round. Lebioda posted three birdies on the back nine.
Senior Chase Seiffert had a 3-over 75 in the first round and is tied for 33rd. Freshman Rowin Caron is tied for 55th with a 5-over 77. The Seminole played an even par back nine today.
“We were in a similar position last event and responded with a very good final two rounds,” finished Jones. “We will need that same execution starting tomorrow morning. We want to have a chance to win this tournament on Tuesday.”
Freshman Collin Engelhardt posted a 6-over 78 today and is playing as an individual.
The Seminoles are part of a 17-team field with Cincinnati, DePaul, Eastern Michigan, Kennesaw State, Kentucky, Louisville, Marquette, Mercer, Middle Tennessee State, North Carolina State, Rice, South Carolina, South Florida, Troy, Virginia and Wisconsin.
