TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –No. 6 Florida State used Thursday’s practice to put the finishing touches on its preparation for its second game of the season.

“Really good Thursday…liked our whole tempo, liked our focus – that was one of the most focused Thursday’s we have had in a long time, “FSU head football coach Jimbo Fisher said. “I like the way this team is learning to practice and put itself together. It’s been a good week and I think they finished it off today with a good week.”

The Seminoles host Savannah State of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Saturday in a game added late after a would-be meeting with No. 8 West Virginia was cancelled due to the Mountaineers move to the Big 12 Conference. More from Head Coach Jimbo Fisher:

On his comments about seeing the focus as very important this week:
“I’ve really appreciated it. I mean they really have and I think it’s showing some of the maturity which we have. Like I said, it was a very good week of practice.”

On how important it was to see how they handled this week and how it translates to Saturday:
“I think it’s part of it – I don’t say it’s more important but I think it’s just as important. You have to learn to create a habit in the way you prepare for things. I was very pleased with that, I really was. To me it’s one of those little signs – like you say as a parent with your kids sometimes – you see little things that trigger then you know things are going in a good way and are in a good place. It shows me where our mind is and how we are learning to do things.

On whether he has decided on playing the freshmen defensive ends:
“They (Chris Casher and Mario Edwards, Jr.) are both going to play. They are going to play throughout the season. We are going to start playing them and getting them involved in things and we are going to go with them.”

On what did Casher and Edwards show this week:
“They always were in a good place. I liked where they were. You couldn’t justify enough reps with those (other) three guys because they were so good. But with one of them out and you start developing for a situation that can occur and I’m very happy where Giorgio (Newberry) is too, I think he’s had a great camp. I’ve been very happy there. And Toshmon (Stevens) can give you some (reps). I think these guys -- we can push them right now and justify the reps and what they are dong. And they both can help on special teams.”

On Injuries:
You had (Nick) O’Leary out. But I think he can play. There is a possibility he can play, I don’t know if he will. (Bryan) Stork can play. (Chad) Abrams can play. (Anthony) McCloud – he’ll definitely play. He’s had a really good week. He had a really good pass rush yesterday. I was very pleased with his play. Forty-eight hours is a long time. It won’t be based on the feel of the game, it will be based more on their health. But, I think there will be able to play. You want them to get reps and if they are ready to play, they’ll play. We will be smart if it is close. “

On the depth at tight end with Kevin Haplea and Christo Kourtzidis:
“(Playing them) wouldn’t hurt – that’s for sure. That definitely would not hurt.”

On how big of a game can this be for Jacob Coker:
“It will be interesting. I am anxious to see it. If we can get that far, everybody has us getting that far. I want to make sure we can get that far and do the things we’ve got to do. I have been very pleased, he took some reps today in practice like he has been and look sharp. He’s a very talented young man.”
