Seminoles Finish Weekend Play

MIAMI – The Florida State men’s tennis team finished their weekend play Sunday. Three Seminoles ended the UM Invitational with two singles wins. Vahid Mirzadeh ended his run at the D’Novo/ITA All-American Championships on Saturday with a loss.

No. 35 Mirzadeh (Wellington, Fla.) lost to No. 7 Steve Johnson in the quarterfinals of the singles consolation bracket in the D’Novo/ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla. Johnson, who went on to win the bracket, won 7-5, 6-3.

In Miami, the team had a successful Saturday with each player posting a singles win including freshman Blake Davis who won both of his matches for the day. The Austin, Texas, native defeated each Juan Acuna of USF and Waylon Chin of Miami in two sets 6-4, 6-2 and 6-3, 6-1, respectively. Davis concluded the tournament with a 2-2 record.

Also going 2-2 for the weekend was Jordan Kelly-Houston (Christchurch, New Zealand). The sophomore won Saturday 6-2, 6-7 (4), 10-8 against Nokolas Zogaj of Arkansas. On Sunday Kelly-Houston won the Seminoles only singles match with a 6-4, 6-4 match over Miami’s Gabriel Flores.

Junior Owen Long finished his flight with a 2-2 record. On Saturday he defeated Andrew Sloan of Florida Atlantic. The Tallahassee native won in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.

Sophomore Anderson Reed (Daphne, Ala.) posted a 7-5, 6-1 win against South Florida’s Yanick Yoshizawa on Saturday. Andres Bucaro (Guatemala City, Guatemala) won on Saturday against Oliver Webb of FAU. The sophomore won 6-3, 6-4.

Up next for the Seminoles is the ITA Regional Championships in Gainesville, Fla.
