Tallahassee, FL - After a sluggish opening day of bowl practice, the Florida State football team bounced back in familiar fashion Wednesday as it continued preparation for the Chick-fil-A Bowl.

“It was a lot better; crisper, bouncing around,” said FSU coach Jimbo Fisher. “They got back in the mode. You could tell that yesterday got them back in the groove. … We had a good day today.”

Though this is Fisher’s first season as a head coach, he will be leaning on a formula of bowl practice that should be quite familiar to most of the Seminoles. For the second consecutive day, the ‘Noles spent the bulk of practice time polishing up their fundamentals, which at times tend to lapse over the course of a long season.

“A lot of our bowl philosophies are the same when Coach (Bobby) Bowden was here,” Fisher said. “We did that at Auburn and at LSU we kept a similar type situation as coach did here. He’s always won great in bowls and it’s a pattern we feel very good about and it has been very successful.”

Bowden’s success in bowls was virtually unmatched in the college ranks. He posted a 22-10-1 record in the postseason during his 34 seasons at the helm. Naturally, he was practice model was adopted by many other coaches.

Fisher said he’s looking for that fine balance between developing players during that extra practice time and preparing the team to play. He described the plan he’s use as:

“Back to basics and understanding; that you don’t game plan too long. … You treat it as spring ball early, get back to fundamentals and basics and get better, then you work into the plan, but not overwork it.”

Fisher said the ‘Noles will focus on fundamentals again Thursday before turning their attention to South Carolina, whom they will meet Dec. 31 in the Georgia Dome.

Tailback Jermaine Thomas, who missed the final three games of the regular season with a knee sprain, has been cleared to return to full practice Thursday.
