Sarasota, FL - Sophomore Connor Smith (Tampa, Fla.) is undefeated after his second day at the Illini Open in Sarasota, Fla. He, along with the rest of the members from the No. 27 Florida State men’s tennis team, is competing against No. 15 Texas Tech and No. 16 Illinois at the Sarasota Bath and Racquet Club. Play begins at 11:00 am tomorrow to conclude the tournament.
After going 2-0 yesterday, Smith continued his winning ways by again going 2-0. In singles he started slow by being down 3-0 to Stephen Hoh of Illinois but quickly redeemed himself by winning 6-4, 6-1.
“I think Connor has been the highlight of the tournament for us so far with his two singles wins,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “Today he got off to a slow start down 3-0 then won 6-4, 6-1. His intensity is really good and I feel like he’s improved a lot in his conditioning and speed and it’s really showing itself on the court.”
In doubles play, Smith teamed up with senior Vahid Mirzadeh (Wellington, Fla.) to defeat the No. 20 doubles tandem. The Seminoles won easily against Illinois’s Dennis Nevolo and Abe Souza 8-2.
“Connor (Smith) has a good win in doubles with Vahid (Mirzadeh) today over the ranked team of Nevolo and Souza,” continued Hultquist. “It’s a really good quality win. Unfortunately we were hurt some in the fall and weren’t able to play as much so it’s good for our guys to have a good quality win.”
Sophomore Andres Bucaro (Guatemala City, Guatemala) has also gone undefeated in singles this tournament as well. Today he defeated Gabriel Wanderly of Texas Tech.
Freshman Blake Davis (Austin, Texas) picked up his first singles victory of the season with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Texas Tech’s Vitor Manzini. Sophomore Anderson Reed (Daphne, Ala.) picked up his first spring singles win by defeating Bruno Abdelnour of Illinois 7-6 (7), 6-2.
