TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State junior pitcher Lacey Waldrop was named Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I National Player of the Week on March 4 as announced by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.
“I am extremely excited for Lacey and all that's she's worked for,” said head coach Lonni Alameda. “From the end of the season last year through this past fall her vision has been to be a big time contributor and lead this team. We are all about the big picture of the team, but to be nationally recognized for her individual efforts is a great honor and we are very proud of her.”
Waldrop posted a 3-1 record this week behind two road wins over ranked teams as Florida State defeated No. 25 Auburn, 5-4, on February 26 and took down No. 11 Alabama on March 2 by a score of 5-1.
She limited the opposition to a .214 batting average and only gave up two earned runs on the entire week. Both runs were scored on solo home runs. Waldrop finished the week with 22.0 innings pitched allowing six walks while recording 29 total strikeouts.
“I'm really excited to get the award,” said Waldrop. “I could not have this kind of success without the support of my teammates. They make some great defensive plays behind me and are always scoring a bunch of runs. That allows me to be calmer in the circle so I don't have to worry about the pressure situations. Knowing that they will always have my back really helps me with my confidence.”
Waldrop is the fifth Seminole since 1998 to earn national player of the week honors and the first since Monica Perry in 2012. She joins Jessica van der Linden (2003, 2004), Brandi Stuart (2001) and Jennifer White-Cody (1998).
Florida State is now ranked No. 9 in both the NFCA and USA Softball polls. The Seminoles travel to Charlottesville, Va., this weekend and open ACC play with a three-game series against Virginia with a doubleheader on March 8 and a single game on March 9.
