ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) _ The New York Yankees are playoff
bound for the 13th consecutive season. The Yankees wrapped up at
least the AL wild card by blasting Tampa Bay 12-4.
Robinson Cano (kuh-NOH') launched a three-run homer while the
Yankees were scoring seven times in the fifth to take a 9-1 lead.
Cano had five RBIs for the Yanks, who are 70-and-38 since a
Derek Jeter also homered and Jorge Posada drove in three runs to
support Chien-Ming Wang's (chehn ming wahngz) 19th win.
Wang left the game with a 12-2 lead, allowing seven hits over
six innings to move to 19-and-7. Wang is the first Yankees pitcher
to win at least 19 games in back-to-back seasons since Tommy John
won 21 and 22 in 1979 and 1980.
J.P. Howell was torched for eight runs and six hits in four and
two-thirds to drop to 1-and-6.
George Steinbrenner moved to the front row of the owner's private suite, and the celebration was on.
The New York Yankees clinched their 13th straight postseason
appearance, beating the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 12-4 Wednesday night. This assures them of at least a wild-card berth in the playoffs.
The victory, New York's 15th in 20 games, eliminated defending
AL champion Detroit from postseason contention. It set up a
probable first-round matchup with Cleveland, the Central champion.
