Tallahassee, Fla.- It came down to the final event on both the men's and women's side, but in the end both the Garnet and Gold came out victorious at the Florida State swimming and diving annual Garnet and Gold meet.
On the men's side, the Garnet squad escaped with a 138.5-134.5 victory, while the Gold team took a 141-138 win on the women's side.
"You have to try to predict who's going to step up, who's going to be able to handle this many events," said head coach Neil Harper. "The exciting thing is that we had some good results. The kids really took pride in what they were doing. It was a win-win for all of us."
Sophomore Stevi Steinhaur (Pensacola, Fla.) had an excellent meet, winning the 50 freestyle (23.94) and finishing second in the 100 free with a time of 52.49.
"She's someone who's just come up so much," said Harper. "To do the times that she did today, she just really stood out to me."
Also standing out again were the freshmen who combined to win seven events led my C.J. Hendry (Evans, GA) and Lowri Tynan (Wrexham, Clywd, Wales) who both won two events.
"They (the freshman) have come here knowing the bar has been raised," said Harper. "The exciting thing for them is they know if you want to be on the traveling team, if you want to make your mark then you need to get going."
Other multiple event winners include junior Scott Baker who won the 50 and 100 freestyle events, senior Ian Powell who won the 200 fly and 200 back and Nick Graves who won both distance events, the 500 and 1000 free. On the women's side, junior Georgia Holderness won the 200 free and 200 individual medley.
Florida State's kicks off it's dual meet season at home on October 19 against Miami and Florida A&M.
