FSU Baseball Announces 2008 Schedule

Tallahassee, Fla. – Florida State baseball announced its schedule for the 2008 season on Wednesday, September 26. The Seminoles will open the season inside the friendly confines of Dick Howser Stadium on Mike Martin Field with a four-game set against the Duquesne Dukes beginning Friday, February 22.

Eleven teams on this year’s schedule recorded 30 or more wins a season ago. Eight schools earned a bid to participate in the NCAA Regional in 2007, while three teams finished last year ranked in the top 25.

“The strength of schedule is right up there at the top with the addition of Auburn for four games, Georgia at home for two games and Stetson, an NCAA Tournament team, for four games,” said head coach Mike Martin. “Our schedule is certainly going to be at the top of many lists in terms of difficulty.”

For the second straight year, Florida State will square-off against college baseball’s national runner-up as they travel to face the University of North Carolina for a three-game set April 25-27.

The Seminoles, the reigning Atlantic Division Champions, will compete in a 30-game ACC schedule for the third year in a row playing all but one league school. After not facing Virginia in the regular season the last two years, the Cavaliers were added to the schedule and will travel to Tallahassee April 4-6.

“If you look at the last two years, you have got to look at Virginia as being right up there as one of the top teams in the conference,” add Martin. “The ACC schedule is always a challenge and we are looking forward to the competition those teams will present week after week.”

Other ACC schools making the trek to Tallahassee in 2008 include Maryland (March 7-9), Georgia Tech (March 12-14) and Miami (April 18-20). FSU will host NC State (May 15-17) in the final regular season series for both teams.

League road trips for the Seminoles in 2008 include games at Virginia Tech (March 21-23), Wake Forest (March 28-30), Boston College (April 11-13) and Clemson (May 3-5). In 2008 and 2009, Florida State will not face the Duke Blue Devils.

Florida State’s non-conference schedule is highlighted by three teams from the SEC. Florida State and Auburn will play a four-game set with the first two games in Auburn and the next two in Tallahassee. Georgia visits the state capital of Florida for two games, while intra-state rival Florida is on the schedule for three games including an April 1 showdown at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville, site of the ACC Baseball Championship.

Other non-conference home opponents include UNC Asheville, Stetson (Atlantic-Sun regular season champions), Jacksonville (Atlantic-Sun Champions), North Florida and Savannah State. Florida State will travel to Deland, Fla. for two games against the Hatters and will face the Dolphins in Jacksonville on April 2.

For the second straight year, the Seminoles will travel to Clearwater, Fla., to face the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday, February 26. Last year 4,676 fans packed Bright House Networks Field for the exhibition contest.

“It was really an honor for the Phillies to call us again,” stated Martin. “With their team being right in the thick of the wild card chase this time of year, it makes it even more fun for us to follow them. We are pulling for them to make the playoffs. We were very impressed with the organization and for our team to be invited to play them again does a lot for us in the recruiting area.”
