Tallahassee, FL - #5 Florida State (3-0) is off to red hot start this season with three shutout victories over Washington State, Gonzaga and Stetson. The Seminoles, who didnt allow a single shot to be attempted on them against Stetson, now hit the road to play against the Auburn Tigers (2-1) Friday, September 3rd at 8:00pm and Mercer (2-2-1) on Sunday, September 5th at 1:00pm. The Seminoles have only lost to Auburn once in nine all-time meetings, losing 1-0 during their first matchup in 1995. Since then the Seminoles have reeled off eight straight victories over Auburn, allowing just one goal in three matches, and shutting out the Tigers in the other five contests. Against Mercer, Florida State has won all three matchups dating back to 1998.
The last two meetings against Auburn both occurred during the 2008 season when Florida State defeated the Tigers 3-0 during a September 12th matchup at Auburn. The two teams would square off again in the second round of the NCAA tournament as the Noles knocked off the Tigers 1-0. Overall Florida State has outscored Auburn 22-4 during their series and is 22-15-1 all-time against schools from the South Eastern Conference.
During this past weekend, five different Seminoles scored a goal against Stetson. Three of those players that scored, junior Casey Short, sophomore Breezy Hupp and junior CC Cobb, registered their first goals of the 2010 season. Right now were kind of just building up, seeing where people fit in the positions, said Hupp. Personally whenever I get on the field to play I just want to give 100% and to make an impact. If I get subbed in, or if I am starting, I just play 100% and never let that level go down.
Freshman CC Cobb, who scored for the first time of her young career, had this to say about her big goal, It was probably the best feeling Ive had since Ive been here. You dont really know before a game if youre going to score or not, but when it went in, I was going crazy and my teammates were going crazy. While the goal was certainly an exciting moment for the freshman, she has also been able to keep the moment in proper perspective, Yes it does give me confidence, but it doesnt make me too confident. I think I still have a lot to work on. Im still going to keep trying as hard as I can because I want to do the best for my team.
While the Seminoles have huge matchups next week against rival Florida, they are not looking past their opponents this weekend. Were definitely focused on the Auburn and Mercer game, said Casey Short. Auburn and Mercer will be two quality opponents. I think its going to be a battle and a good test for us.
