Yankees Lose; Indians Advance to ALCS

NEW YORK (AP) _ The Cleveland Indians are the latest team to end
the New York Yankees' season prematurely.
The Indians have advanced to the American League Championship
Series, closing out the division series three games to one with a
6-4 triumph over the Yankees. Cleveland handled Chien-Ming Wang
(chehn-mihng wahng) for the second time in the series while earning
a berth in the ALCS for the first time since 1998.
Grady Sizemore led off the game with a homer before Jhonny
Peralta added an RBI single later in the first inning. Wang was
lifted after loading the bases with nobody out in the second.
The Indians tacked on a run on a double-play grounder and made
it 4-0 on Asdrubal (as-DROO'-bul) Cabrera's RBI single off Mimke
Mussina later in the inning.
Victor Martinez added a two-run single in the fourth to give the
Indians a 6-1 cushion.
The Yankees closed the gap on solo homers by Robinson Cano
(kuh-NOH'), Alex Rodriguez and Bobby Abreu (uh-BRAY'-oo) but were
eliminated in the division series for the third straight year.
Winning pitcher Paul Byrd gave up eight hits but just two runs
over five-plus innings, leaving the game after Cabrera's
sixth-inning blast. Joe Borowski served up Abreu's blast but got
the final three outs for the save.
Wang was 0-and-2 in the series.
