The battle of the unbeatens was bound to have a losing team. Unfortunately for Valdosta State, defeat was in the hometurf.
The Blazers(5-1) dropped a 35-31 ballgame to Delta State (6-0) under the Thursday night lights. VSU came into the game ranked No. 1 in the Southeast Regional rankings, but will undoubtedly slip in the rankings after the loss.
Coach David Dean's Blazers held a 17-0 lead at halftime after recovering a blocked punt in the endzone, recorded 2 safeties, and connecting on a 10 yard Wille Copeland to Zach Parker passing touchdown. But the second half saw 28 unanswered points scored by the Statesmen to put the Blazers in a desperate situation. Down by 4 and moving his team down the field with just 40 seconds left on the clock, Willie Copeland's pass was intercepted in the red zone. Delta State took a knee and took a 35-31 victory away from Valdosta State.
