TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State University President T.K. Wetherell has announced that the contract of Head Men’s Basketball Coach Leonard Hamilton has been extended by two years taking his contract with the university through the 2011-2012 season.
“Coach Hamilton advocates winning not only on the basketball court but also in the classroom and in the game of life,” said Wetherell. “Coach Hamilton is responsible for developing an exciting basketball program that is headed in the right direction. He builds winning basketball teams and young men of character.”
“I am very happy and appreciative of the university’s and athletic administration’s confidence in our program and staff,” said Hamilton. “We are pledged to take Seminole basketball to new heights. We are well on our way to becoming a program of significance in the ACC and nationally. The support of the emerging athletic department and President Wetherell makes an indisputable statement of the university’s commitment to ACC basketball, our program and student-athletes at Florida State University.”
Florida State continued to raise its national profile last season as the Seminoles won 22 games, won four games over teams who played in the NCAA Tournament and were treated to the play of All-America Third-Team selection Al Thornton in one of the most successful seasons in the last decade for the program. Senior forward Al Thornton earned All-America Third-Team and All-ACC First-Team honors and finished as the runner-up for the prestigious title of ACC Player of the Year honors.
"I am pleased that we are extending the services of Coach Hamilton for another two years in recognition of the work he has done with the Florida State men's basketball program," FSU Interim Athletics Director Dr. Bill Proctor said. "I look forward to working with him."
Hamilton is in his sixth season at Florida State with a record of 87-71, including consecutive 20-win seasons, with three postseason appearances in the last four seasons.
