Seminoles Come Out On Top

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) _ Preston Parker ran for 133 yards and a
touchdown in his first start at tailback as Florida State clinched
a winning season with a 24-16 victory over Maryland.

That gave coach Bobby Bowden his 300th career win at the school.

It also assured that Bowden, who now has 373 career coaching
wins, will keep his lead over Penn State's Joe Paterno for at least
one more week in there long-running competition for the most wins
by major college coaches.

The game matched two schools sorely in need of a win.

Florida State assured itself of its 31st consecutive winning
season while Maryland needs a win at North Carolina State next week
just to become bowl eligible.
