ATLANTA (AP) _ Georgia running back Knowshon Moreno has been
selected as the Southeastern Conference freshman of the year.
The Associated Press All-SEC football team released yesterday put the 5-foot-11, 207-pound Moreno in the backfield, along with Florida quarterback Tim Tebow and Arkansas running back Darren McFadden.
Georgia tackle Geno Atkins was named to the first-team All-SEC defense by the conference sports writers and broadcasters.
Tebow was chosen as the offensive player of the year, and LSU tackle Glenn Dorsey as defensive player of the year. Mississippi State's Sylvester Croom won the coaching honors.
Georgia center Fernando Velasco made the second-team offense, and linebacker Dannell Ellerbe was picked for the defensive squad. Earning honorable mention was Bulldog kicker Brandon Coutu.
Moreno was redshirted last season. It wasn't known if he'd get much playing time this year, but senior running backs Thomas Brown and Kregg Lumpkin were both hampered by injuries. Moreno, who is from New Jersey, had five straight 100-yard games and was the second freshman in Georgia history to rush for 1,000 yards, following Herschel Walker.
