For a few of the seniors on the Valdosta State Blazers, this was deja vu since they had won the national championship as freshman but in 2007, they got play a bigger role in the championship drive.
But Blazers fans had to count on another comeback from VSU as they trailed at the half 14-3 in the cold and sometimes wet conditions in Florence, Alabama.
The Blazers would outscore the NW Missouri State Bearcats 22-6 in the second half of play. Both Zach Parker and Clay Callaway had touchdown receptions, but one of the turning points was Maurice Leggette's blocked extra point that was returned by VSU for 2 points to cut the Bearcats lead to 20-19. With under a minute remaining, the Blazers' Michael Terry plunged in from 1 yard out for what proved to be the winning score.
Senior linebacker William Montford sealed the win when he intercepted a pass with seconds remaining on the clock. Coach David Dean had an exceptional first year as head coach losing only to Delta State on October 11, but he got to leave the field as a championship head coach.
