MARIANNA, Fla. (January 26, 2008) - Tallahassee Community College rallied from an eleven-point, first-half deficit to claim a 67-65 win over FCCAA No. 5/NJCAA No. 24 Chipola College in a crucial Panhandle Conference contest on Saturday evening at the Milton H. Johnson Health Center.
The win snapped a two-game losing streak for TCC and ensured the Lady Eagles it would win the season series against Chipola for the first time in six seasons. TCC defeated Chipola, 66-47, on January 5 in the PC opener.
After dropping ten consecutive games to its arch-rival, TCC has now won back-to-back contests against Chipola for the first time since 2002. More importantly, the victory pulled the FCCAA No. 6 Lady Eagles (11-7) into a second-place tie in the PC standings. At 4-3, TCC shares second place with Okaloosa-Walton College, who lost 73-51 to Gulf Coast Community College on Saturday evening. Pensacola Junior College is one-half game behind at 4-4 while Chipola slipped into fifth place, one game back at 3-4.
TCC took its first second-half lead on a Shamar Harris basket with 8:27 left in the game. The bucket ignited a 7-0 run that ended on a layup by Angelee Latouche. Latouche hit a baseline jumper on the Lady Eagles’ next possession to keep TCC’s lead at six. But Chipola responded with nine unanswered points and led 65-62 with 2:52 left. The Lady Indians didn’t score again.
Latouche hit another baseline jumper to pull TCC within a point and Daniela Nopuente gave the Lady Eagles the lead for good when she connected on a 15-footer with 54 seconds remaining.
Latouche (15 points) and Nopuente (11 points) were part of a quartet of Lady Eagles in double-figures. Harris led TCC with 17 points. Quaticqua Johnson added 11.
Gekeela Clemmons led all scorers with 19 points for Chipola (17-5). Latoya Williams added 18 points and 13 rebounds.
TCC trailed by 11 on three separate occasions in the first half before making a charge. An 11-3 run, capped by a three-pointer from Nopuente, brought the Lady Eagles within one, 26-25, at the 2:21 mark. After drawing a foul on a three-pointer, Tiffany McClure connected on all three attempts to forge a 30-30 tie at the half.
TCC returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Pensacola for a 6:30 p.m. contest against the Lady Pirates.
