MIAMI (AP) _ Jose Garcia broke away in the final mile and a half
of the ING Miami Marathon today to capture the men's title in the
Garcia, of Guatemala, finished in 2:17:43. He beat out Kenyan
runner Samuel Kiprotich, who placed second with a time of 2:18:14,
and Ethiopian runner Demesse Tafera, who finished at 2:18:29.
Kelly Lijleblad of Boulder, Colorado, won the women's title. She
finished in 2:47:13, beating Russian runner Nedezha Tuptova, who
finished in second place with a time of 2:48:09.
More than 10,400 runners competed in this year's race.
