TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (June 4, 2008) - Tallahassee Community College softball standouts Becky Smith and Mary Helen Tyler were named Third-Team All-America by Easton Sports, Inc. on Wednesday, according to a release from Easton.
Each year, Easton Sports, Inc., selects All-America teams comprised of players from its partner institutions. The All-America teams include players at both the two-year and four-year level.
“We had a very difficult time selecting the (Easton All-American) teams because of so many deserving candidates,” said Pam Newton, Easton Fast Pitch Promotions Manager.
Tyler, a sophomore from Marianna, Fla., was previously named First-Team All-Panhandle Conference, Second-Team All-FCCAA and Second-Team NFCA All-South Region. Starting all 53 games in the TCC outfield, she finished with a team-high .359 batting average, 70 hits and .503 slugging percentage while hitting three home runs and sharing the team lead with 38 RBI. She was named to both the FCCAA and Gulf District All-Tournament Teams and batted .500 (6-for-12) at the NJCAA Division I Fast Pitch Championships.
Smith, a sophomore from Fairfield, Calif., began the season alongside Tyler in TCC’s outfield before moving behind the plate for the final 41 games. Like Tyler, she earned First-Team All-PC, Second-Team All-FCCAA and Second-Team NFCA All-South Region honors. In 53 games, she batted .316 with one home run, 23 RBI and 16 stolen bases while earning a spot on the FCCAA and Gulf District All-Tournament Teams. Smith, TCC Softball’s Student-Athlete of the Year, has signed with the University of Texas-El Paso.
