TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (February 25, 2009) – Tallahassee Community College placed six players on the Coaches’ All-Panhandle Conference Men’s Basketball Teams, announced by the league on Wednesday. The six selections include two players, freshmen Bernard James and Marvell Waithe, who were named First-Team All-PC.
James, a native of Savannah, Ga., missed the team’s first seven games due to an injury sustained in preseason workouts. Once he returned, however, he became a dominant force in the paint, averaging 12.7 points and 8.8 rebounds per game while shooting 61.7 percent from the floor. His numbers in PC play were even better – 15.4 points and 11.2 rebounds per game and a .622 field goal percentage.
Waithe, a first-year player from Toronto, Ontario, appeared in 27 games and was the Eagles’ top scorer (18.9 ppg) and rebounder (8.6 rpg). He burst onto the scene with a 21-point, 23-rebound performance in his TCC debut against Gordon College then later enjoyed a 39-point, 21-rebound night against nationally-ranked South Georgia Tech. In 12 league contests, he averaged 17.6 points and 7.6 rebounds per game.
Sophomore Jeremy Robinson was named second-team All-PC while a trio of freshmen – Terrell Barrett, Jamel Brazeal and Hugh Robertson – was named honorable mention.
Robinson, the lone returnee from TCC’s 2007-08 squad, appeared in 27 games and averaged 7.0 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.8 assists. The Baltimore, Md., native averaged 7.2 points, 2.0 rebounds and 2.9 assists in 11 PC games.
Barrett, a native of Farmville, N.C., appeared in 19 games and averaged 5.6 points and 3.8 rebounds. Like James, injuries sidelined him for much of the team’s early-season schedule. Upon returning, however, his numbers climbed steadily and he became a fixture in TCC’s starting lineup by season’s end. He appeared in 12 PC games, including nine starts, and averaged 7.3 points and 5.2 rebounds.
Brazeal, a native of Mobile, Ala., played in all 28 games and averaged 6.3 points, 2.7 rebounds and a team-high 3.0 assists. He started ten of the team’s 12 PC games and averaged 6.8 points, 2.6 rebounds and 3.2 assists.
Robertson, a native of Macon, Ga., was the only player to start all 28 games for TCC in 2008-09. He averaged 12.0 points and 4.5 rebounds while shooting 48.0 percent from the floor. In 12 PC games, he averaged 11.1 points and 4.3 rebounds.
Chipola College’s Casey Mitchell was voted the PC Player of the Year while the Indians’ Greg Heiar was named Coach of the Year.
