TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – With severe weather headed towards the Tallahassee area, the No. 17 Florida State women’s team (12-6, 5-4) adapted to changes quickly in its match against NC State Sunday, April 5. In an effort to avoid weather delays, the Seminoles bumped up their face-off with the Wolfpack to 11:30 a.m. and postponed doubles to first battle in singles where FSU again found success. FSU didn’t allow the adjustments to hinder its goal as the Seminoles defeated NC State 6-1 to earn its fifth-consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference win.

“We are fired up,” FSU head coach Jennifer Hyde said. “It was a good day. They did a fantastic job of coming out in singles ready to go. They got some early leads and never really let up. They did a great job of taking care of business and doing what we have been coaching them to do.”

Earning the first point for FSU to give the 1-0 lead was junior co-captain Jessica Sucupira. The Whitehouse, Texas native continued her reign of court six as she defeated Jackie Ussery 6-1, 6-2.

Ania Rynarzewska (Inowroclaw, Poland) gained the second point for the Seminoles on court five. The lone senior governed her court in her battle against NC State’s Pender Sessoms 6-1, 6-1.

“It is great for Ania to finish her home-match season with a win.” Hyde said.

Fellow co-captain Lauren Macfarlane (Ogden, Utah) shined on court four as she trounced the Wolfpack’s Daria Petrovic 6-1, 6-3 to give FSU the third point.

After losing three points consecutively, the Wolfpack fought back as Daria Petrovic overpowered No. 98 Federica Suess (Ludwigshafen, Germany) 6-4, 6-4 to give NC State its first and only point.

Clinching the victory for Florida State was freshman No. 30 Noemie Scharle. The Colmar-Berg, Luxembourg native secured the victory for FSU with her win against No. 113 Berkeley Brock, 6-4, 6-2.

Closing out the singles portion of the match was sophomore No. 65 Katie Rybakova (Coral Springs, Fla.) battling No. 104 Lenka Hojckova. After losing the first set 3-6, Rybakova fought back in the second set, 6-2, to push Hojckova to a third-set match. With the two nationally-ranked players struggling for the third-set win, Rybakova prevailed past the Wolfpack force and trumped Hojckova 6-4.

Luckily for the Seminoles the sun began to shine for both teams to move on to the doubles’ portion of the match. Breaking the 11-match stump and earning the doubles point was Florida State winning on all three courts. The Seminoles dictated doubles on court three and two as both matches were closeouts for FSU, 8-0. Earning the first win for FSU on court three was Scharle and Macfarlane teaming up to beat Sessoms and Ussery. Sophomore Bonny Davidson (Johannesburg, South Africa) paired up with Sucupira to tame the Wolfpack’s Petrovic and Barringer on court two.

Although court one took a bit longer to finish than the others, nonetheless FSU found success in concluding the match on a high note with yet another doubles’ win as Rybakova and Suess defeated No. 41 nationally-ranked doubles threat Brock and Hojckova 8-3.

“Getting over the hump of the doubles point was very timely,” Hyde said. “We needed to do that going into this last weekend of ACC matches and leading into the ACC Championships. They showed today that if they have some conviction with what they are trying to do, then they are better than what the doubles record shows. I am very proud of them. They did a great job.”

“Hopefully if all goes well we will back here in May hosting the first two rounds of regionals,” Hyde said. “In order to get there, though, we still have a lot of work to do. Right now we are sitting where we need to be and need to keep working to put ourselves in a position to host.”
