While the Tallahassee Rollergirls continue to shove around their competition this summer, they're showing love to the community.
League President Kelly Ruggles said, "Ever since we started holding bouts, we have chosen a charity to sponsor for each particular bout. With each charity we donate a portion of our proceeds from the bouts to that charity."
Saturday night the Rollergirls will be taking donations and used cell phones on behalf of Refuge House, and organization aimed at educating and eradicating domestic violence. A fitting partnership for these women you would not want to mess with.
Maggie Cruce, also known as Moxie Knockout, says, "Roller Derby as a sport is amazingly empowering. Even some of the little girls that come and watch the games and how they sort of start to realize that, yeah, you can be tough and you're allowed to do whatever you want. So, to make the connection to women who have been disenfranchised and have had their power taken away, to do something to give it back to them, and to show them that they do have the power to take control of their own lives, is an amazing opportunity."
Patricia Smith, the Director of Voluntary Community Education Programs for Refuge House, said, "For them to not only think about themselves in doing this, but to think about other women. I think it definitely sends a message to our women that they're not forgotten and that they too can do something like this."
