Tallahassee, FL - The fifth annual Ernie Sims Track Invitational was held at Mike Long Track on Saturday. It was the conclusion to a two-day program of events to support Sims' Big HITS Foundation.
On Friday, Sims opened with his annual football and cheer camp. Later that evening, he held a celebrity flag football game.
On Saturday, about 230 athletes, ages 3-18, stepped on the track, put their running shoes on and tried to impress Ernie and his mom, Alice, who used to run track at FSU.
"We started our track club back in 1994 with our son Ernie," said Alice Sims, who is the executive director of the Big HITS Foundation. "So the sport that he started out in was track and field and he has always wanted to do something like this, so that young people, young kids can come up and do some of the same things that he did. So we started it back in 1994 and we're still doing it."
