TALLAHASSEE, FLA. - The Florida A&M University Lady Rattlers were "clicking on all cylinders" Tuesday afternoon, defeating the Lady Rams of Winston-Salem State 9-1 and 2-1 in a non-conference doubleheader at the Lady Rattlers Softball Complex.
With the win, FAMU improves to 4-15 overall, and extended their current winning streak to three games, the longest of the season for Coach Veronica Wiggins' squad.
Alicia Mitchell got the win in game one, surrendering only one run and three hits through five innings, while WSSU's Amber Shore recorded the loss.
In the first inning, the Lady Rams would draw first blood after Devin Gillette scored on a throwing error by FAMU's Ashley Smith. The Lady Rattlers would prevent them from scoring again, and scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to go ahead, 2-1 at the end of the first.[p] After increasing their lead to 3-1 in the second inning, the Lady Rattlers would put the game out of reach, putting on a hitting clinic in the bottom of the third, scoring six runs on four hits to extend its lead to 9-1 after three.
Mitchell then held the Lady Rams to just two hits over the next two innings, and retired six batters on her way to securing the victory for FAMU.
Game two was a much more competitive game with the Lady Rams jumping on top of the Lady Rattlers 1-0 in the second inning after Georgette Twitty scored on an Ashley Boswell single. The Lady Rams would not relinquish their lead until late in the game when Alicia Strafford beat out Kendall Sutton's throw to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Lady Rattlers a 2-1 win.
Freshman Ashley Jones (1-4) got her first collegiate win, giving up four hits and one earned run in seven innings, while Ashley Boswell (1-2) took the loss for the Lady Rams, surrendering three hits and one earned run in a little over six innings.
The Lady Rattlers return to action Friday when they take on Southern Illinois in the Florida State Invitational. FAMU takes on the Salukis at 1:00 p.m., and then meets the University of Georgia at 4:00 p.m.
