TAMPA, Fla. (AP) _ The Atlantic Coast Conference basketball
tournament starts tomorrow in Florida.
The league's signature event begins with Leonard Hamilton's
ninth-seeded Florida State facing Eighth seeded Clemson, while
fifth-seeded Maryland meets 12th-seeded Miami in afternoon games at
the St. Pete Times Forum.
Seventh-seeded Duke is making a rare first-day appearance in a
tournament it has won seven of the past eight years. Tomorrow night
the Blue Devil takes on Tenth-seeded North Carolina State, and
sixth-seed Georgia Tech faces 11th-seeded Wake Forest.
The top four seeds _ North Carolina, Virginia, Virginia Tech and
Boston College _ play their opening games on Friday.
Based on an unpredictable regular season in which North Carolina
entered its finale against Duke with a chance to be seeded first or
fifth, the four-day tournament figures to be a wide-open affair.
