TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Florida State beat Clemson 67 to 66 today in the opener of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament.

Al Thornton's free throw with one-point-five seconds remaining capped his 25-point, 11-rebound performance.

Thornton is the ACC's leading scorer and runner-up for conference player of the year.

He carried the ninth-seeded Seminoles down the stretch. His block at one end of the floor denied Clemson what looked like a sure basket, then drove the baseline on the other end for a dunk that tied the game for the last time.

Florida State advances to tomorrow's quarterfinals against top seed North Carolina.
