Marlins New Ballpark Receives Votes

MIAMI (AP) _ City and county officials have both expressed
interest in building a new ballpark for the Florida Marlins on the
site of the Orange Bowl.
The Miami City Commission voted unanimously yesterday to support
a 490-(m)-million-dollar plan to fund a ballpark somewhere in
Miami. The Miami-Dade Commission passed a similar measure by a vote
of 11-to-1 on Tuesday.
During Tuesday's county meeting, the Orange Bowl site quickly
drew support, and city commissioners at yesterday's meeting also
liked the idea.
Despite plans to renovate the Orange Bowl for University of
Miami football games, the city has not secured financing for the
project. Plus the Hurricanes are seriously considering a move to
Dolphin Stadium.
The next step is to persuade the Florida Legislature to approve
a 60-(m)-million-dollar state sales tax rebate to close the
financing gap.
