Athens, GA - University of Georgia head football coach Mark Richt will join the Bulldogs' volleyball team as a guest coach for their match against Alabama on Sunday.
The Bulldogs (11-9, 2-7 Southeastern Conference) square off against the Crimson Tide (6-14, 4-6 SEC) Sunday at 1:30 p.m. ET at the Ramsey Student Center and admission is free.
In addition to joining head volleyball coach Joel McCartney and his staff as a guest coach, Richt will also provide a ceremonial first serve prior to the match following the national anthem and just before player introductions.
"We're excited about Mark coming to the match and being on the bench with us as our guest coach Sunday," McCartney said. "I'm really hoping that will stir up some enthusiasm. We're counting on a great crowd to help support the effort to play our best volleyball versus Alabama. One of the things that I really appreciate about the friendship with Mark is the support he gives me and my program, but really more than that, the support of all programs. He understands the importance of building a sport community of pride through the Bulldog Nation. I'm excited to have him serve the ceremonial first ball into play, and I'm looking forward to having him provide an inspirational message for our team prior to the match on Sunday and being with us through the match."
The football team has an open date this week before returning to action Saturday, Oct. 31 against No. 1-ranked Florida in Jacksonville.
The volleyball team will be in action tonight against Mississippi State. First serve in the battle between the SEC's Bulldogs is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tonight's match promotions include "Campus Organization Night," with the largest campus organization in attendance receiving free pizza, and "Greek Night," with the largest UGA Greek chapter in attendance receiving $100 towards their philanthropy.
Sunday's match versus Alabama will feature a UGA student pizza promotion with each group of four students to check in at the promotions table before the match receiving free pizza.
