Tampa, FL - University of South Florida senior Marcela Gurgel put together arguably her best week of the season to help the Bulls to a pair of BIG EAST wins and earn the outside hitter her first Player of the Week award this season.
“Marcela put up impressive numbers this past weekend,” said head coach Claire Lessinger. “I was so happy to see her do it back-to-back. She brought her A game and helped lead her team to two important wins.”
Gurgel, the 2009 BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year, led the USF offense in straight-set victories over Georgetown and St. John’s. Against the Hoyas, the senior recorded 14 kills, eight digs and three blocks to go along with a .448 hitting percentage. Gurgel set a season-high in three sets with 16 kills versus St. John’s and added an assist, two service aces, eight digs and four blocks. The Fortaleza, Brazil, native paced the conference in kills per set (5.33) and points per set (6.83) this week.
Gurgel and the volleyball team take on FAMU Tuesday in non-conference action at 7 p.m. in The Corral.
