Gainesville, Fla. - Florida sophomore kicker Caleb Sturgis (St. Augustine, Fla.) received two accolades following his performance in No. 1 Florida’s 41-17 win over Georgia on Saturday. Sturgis earned Southeastern Conference Special Teams Player of the Week honors and was named one of the Lou Groza National Collegiate Placekicker Award’s “Stars of the Week.”
College football’s top kicking award, the Lou Groza Award, sponsored by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission, recognizes three of the top kickers each week from FBS division teams. It is the second time this season that Sturgis has been acknowledged.
The SEC Weekly honor is the second of the season for Sturgis, and the seventh of the year for the Gators. He also won the award after his game-winning field goal against Arkansas.
Sturgis connected on both of his field goal attempts, from 56 and 44 yards, against the Bulldogs. The 56-yarder set a new career-long and was the second-longest field goal in Florida history. It was also the longest field goal made in the SEC this season.
He became the only Gator kicker since 1984 to connect on two field goals over 51 yards in the same season (he hit a 51-yarder against Arkansas), and is one of only four kickers in school history to accomplish this feat. He is one of only six kickers in the nation to have two field goals of 51 yards or longer this season, and is one of two SEC kickers to do so.
Sturgis also averaged 68.2 yards on eight kickoffs, including one touchback, to hold Georgia to an average starting field position of its own 20-yard line for the game.
The top-ranked Gators (8-0, 6-0 SEC) continue SEC play at home on Saturday, Nov. 7, against Vanderbilt (2-7, 0-5 SEC). The game, set to kick off at 7:15 p.m., will be broadcast live on ESPN2.
