Bunny Ears Good Luck for Tyler

CECIL, GA. Yep, those were bunny ears on that helmet when Brian Tyler of Parma , Michigan took the green and the checkered flag. Tyler with lucky ears in tack, led all 150-laps of the SGMP 150 Saturday night April 9th as the Premier Racing Association (PRA) launched its second season at South Georgia Motorsports Park (SGMP). Brian was driving the #4 Contos Racing Pink Ford/Beast, the same car that Eric Gordon drove to the very first Big Car Series victory at Illiana Speedway in Schererville, Indiana in 2006.

Having a banner night, Tyler, who was fastest qualifier, drew the number one starting spot in the PRA’s unique way of selecting the first six starting spots. In keeping with the Easter tradition, the fastest six qualifiers selected a plastic Easter egg with numbers inside. Tyler, the number one qualifier, drew the number one putting him on the pole then left the field in tow all night.

10-year old Kaylee Stone held the Easter basket containing the eggs wore a pair of pink bunny ears. After the lucky draw had been made Tyler borrowed the ears and taped them to his helmet for good luck. Tyler stated after the race “When I needed weight in the right rear. I would just lay down the right bunny ear.”

Wayne Reutimann, Jr passed A.J. Fike on the final lap to take the runner-up position and move Fike to third. Eric Gordon wound up fourth and NASCAR Nextel Cup star Ryan Newman rounded out the top five.

Bringing out the first caution of the chilly evening, reigning PRA Big Car Champion Chet Fillip dropped out with mechanical problems on lap 16. The only other yellow flew when Alex Pruett and Mike Lichty got together in turn two.

Racing action diverts to the straight track this weekend as the NHRA Lucas Oil Racing Series comes to all concrete dragway. “Drag racers from all over the south east will bring a huge economic impact to the local area. They will stay near by, dine and purchase necessities over their three days of racing.” According to Richard Hall, SGMP Manager.

The Lucas Oil Series will feature all sportsman classes of the NHRA including Top Alcohol Dragsters and Top Alcohol Funny Cars. The added field of Top Dragsters as well as Top Sportsman, Super Comp and the ‘wheel standers’ of the street classes to name a few. The very best of the NHRA Southeast will compete for those valuable division points. Tickets for the Friday – Sunday are available at the track with racing starting at 10:00 PM both Saturday and Sunday.
