GHSA Football Revises Playoff Brackets

The GHSA issued new playoff brackets for all five football classifications after realizing a mistake was made in the original brackets.

The original playoff brackets had the No. 2 and No. 4 seeds and the No. 1 and No. 3 seeds from regions 1-5 meeting in the state semifinals, which should not happen.

For example, in the original bracket, Lowndes (Region 1-AAAAA, No. 2) and Valdosta (Region 1-AAAAA, No. 4) would have met in the semifinals if each had advanced that far. The brackets have been corrected so that if teams from the same region meet in the state semifinals, it will be a No. 1 seed versus a No. 4 seed or a No. 2 seed against a No. 3 seed.

The Lowndes Vikings' road to the Georgia Dome has changed.

The Vikes have gone from the upper left quadrant to the upper right quadrant. The Vikings are still scheduled to face East Coweta in the first round and defending state champion Camden County in the second round, if each team advances to that point.

In the original bracket, Lowndes had a potential quarterfinal showdown with Region 5-AAAAA champion McEachern. Now the Vikings have a potential quarterfinal showdown with Region 7-AAAAA champion North Gwinnett.

The bracket change will not affect the Valdosta Wildcats unless they advance to the semifinals. The Wildcats are in the lower left quadrant, which remains the same after the change. If the Wildcats made it to the semifinals, they would potentially end up playing Northside, instead of Lowndes . Valdosta and Lowndes wouldn't be able to play each other unless both teams made it to the finals.

The same goes for Brooks County and Cook in the AA bracket. Neither of those teams had its quadrant changed when the new bracket was released.

Like Lowndes , Clinch County (the No. 1 seed from Region 1-A) swapped quadrants. The Panthers went from the upper right to the upper left. They now face the prospect of playing Region 5-A champion Holy Innocents in the quarterfinals. In the original bracket, Clinch would have possibly faced Region 7-A champion Lincoln County.
The same error in the original football bracket was also made in the basketball bracket. The basketball bracket has been corrected as well.
The state playoffs begin on Friday. Lowndes hosts East Coweta and Valdosta travels to Newnan.

Brooks County travels to Putnam County, Cook travels to Northeast (Macon) and Clinch County hosts Marion County.
