TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida A&M Baseball Team split a double-header with league leading Delaware State, dropping a heartbreaker in game one, 13-10, before rebounding in game two, winning 6-4.
In a slug fest in game one, FAMU out hit Delaware State 15-14.
FAMU was led by David James with three hits, followed by Jared Jeffries, Stanley Gnat, Darryl Evans, and Elvin Millan, all finishing with two hits each.
The Hornets were paced by Tom Shelley with three hits, followed by Jamie Friel and Randy Boyer, both finishing with two hits each. Friel led the team in RBIs with three.
Tony Tevis (4-3) got the win for the DSU, giving up eight earned runs and striking out three in six and one-third innings of work, while Eddie Thomas took the loss for FAMU (0-2) giving up four hits and striking out four in one and two-thirds innings of relief work.
An Eric Allen homer gave DSU a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
The Hornets increased their lead in the top of the second, when Wynton Wheather scored on a passed ball, followed by A Ryne Scheiwe sacrifice fly to right field scoring Randy Boyner, giving DSU a 3-0 lead.
Corey McFadden led off the bottom of the third with a double to right field. He then would score on a Gnat RBI single, cutting DSU lead to 3-1.
The Hornets took a 5-1 lead in the top of the fourth on Shelley RBI single scoring Justin Bittner, followed by Schiewe scoring on FAMU pitcher's balk.
FAMU picked up two more runs in the bottom of the fifth on a McFadden leadoff homer, followed by Jeffries scoring on a Gnat's RBI single, cutting DSU's lead to 5-3.
The Rattlers took a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the sixth on a McFadden two-run single scoring both Millan and David James. Then McFadden would score on a passed ball.
DSU tied the game at 6 all in the top of the seventh on a Boyner single scoring Brandon Gravely.
A Millan RBI single gave FAMU a 7-6 lead scoring Darryl Evans in the bottom seventh.
In an explosive eighth inning, the Hornets picked up four runs, sparked by a Jim Johnson triple to centerfield scoring Scheiewe, giving DSU a 10-7 lead.
The Rattlers would then return the favor in the bottom of the eighth with a three run rally to tie the game at 10 all, on a Jeffries single scoring Gordon. Then both McFadden and Jeffries would score on a Schalch single to right field.
DSU would then turn one hit, two FAMU errors into three runs for the 13-10 final in the top of the ninth inning.
In game two, Austin Dill (2-2) got the win for FAMU giving up five hits, three earned runs and striking out six in six innings of work, while Friel took the loss for DSU (3-1) giving up six hits, and two earned runs in six innings of work.
FAMU punched out six hits, while Delaware State was able to manage five.
The loss was the first MEAC defeat this year of the Delaware State Hornets.
The Rattlers (6-31, 3-5 MEAC) were led by Gordon with two hits, while Evans led the team in RBIs with two.
Allen led the Hornets (17-14-1, 7-1 MEAC) in hitting with two, while Gravely, Boyner and McAllister all finished with one hit each.
An Anthony Mazzeo RBI single gave the Rattlers an early lead in the bottom of the first inning scoring Gnat. Mazzeo would then score on a Darryl Evan single, giving the Rattlers a 2-0 lead.
FAMU plated two more runs in the bottom of the second on a DSU infielder's error scoring Peter Guastella. Then a DSU pitcher's balk would score Gordon, increasing FAMU lead to 4-0.
Both Jeffries and Gnat touched the plate in the bottom of the fourth, giving FAMU a 6-0 lead, with Jeffries scoring on a DSU infielder's errors and Gnat scoring on a Evans sacrifice fly to right field.
DSU would score their only runs of the game in the top of the sixth on a Gravely grand slam for the 6-4 final.
FAMU will conclude their three Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference series with DSU on Sunday in a single game in 1 p.m. start.
