CINCINNATI -- Versatile veteran Ryan Freel has agreed to a two-year contract extension through the 2009 season with the Cincinnati Reds.
Freel is the starting center fielder for the Reds this season, but also is expected to see time in the infield. He has started at all three outfield positions and second and third base for the Reds since being signed as a minor league free agent before the 2003 season.
The team announced the deal Monday.
The 32-year-old Freel hit .271 with 37 stolen bases in 132 games with the Reds last year. He has led the Reds in stolen bases the last three seasons. He is hitting .243 in 12 games this season.
