The South Georgia Peanuts have announced the signing of Steve Garrabrants.
Garrabrants, a native of Phoenix, AZ, has spent the last 4 seasons in the
Diamonbacks organization after being selected in the ninth round of the
2003 amateur draft. With the signing, the Peanuts’ roster currently sits
at 22 players.
Garrabrants played his college baseball at Arizona State. During his final
year as a Sun Devil, he hit .324 with eight home runs and 59 RBI. After
being drafted, he appeared in 55 games and hit .276 for Class-A Yakima. In
2004, his first full professional season, Garrabrants began the season
playing for the Diamondbacks’ Class-AAA team at Tucson. He only appeared
in six games before spending the rest of the year at Class-AA and A. He
spent the entire 2005 season at Class-A Lancaster. Last season, he played
105 games at Class-AA Tennessee.
At Arizona State and at the beginning of his professional career,
Garrabrants was primarily used as an infielder. He then made the
transition to the outfield where he played the majority of the time the
past two seasons. He was released by the Diamondbacks during spring
training. This will be his first time playing independent baseball.
The Peanuts will begin to report to Albany the first week of May. Spring
training will begin on May 8th.
