PRINCESS ANNE, Md.-The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) dropped both ends of a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) double header to visiting Florida A & M University (FAMU) today by scores of 7-1 and 5-1. The Hawks offense had trouble stringing hits together as they posted on 12 hits in the two games and two
UMES (7-33, 4-9 MEAC) didn't score in game one until the ninth inning when Justin Hoban hit a sacrifice fly to left that scored Josh Dean. Dean had been hit by a pitch and went to third on a failed pick-off from pitcher Cirillo Manego that went past the Rattler first baseman.
Manego picked the win to improve to 3-5, working a complete game and aloowing just the one unearned run. While his line was good Manego control was a bit off as he walked three and plunked five Hawk batter and had a balk.
Dustin Longchamps took the loss for UMES as he dropped to 3-8, allowing four runs, three earned in eight innings of work. He struck out six Rattler batters.
FAMU (10-31, 6-5 MEAC) got what turned out to be the winning run in the fourth inning as David James scored after reaching on a single through the left side. He stole second and came home when Corey McFadden reached on error by second baseman James Walls.
The Rattlers went on to score one in the fifth, one in the eight and three in the ninth off of UMES reliever Daniel Sterling.
In game two Mike Roberts took the hill for the Hawks. He wound up working a complete game, allowing all five FAMU runs, while only two were earned. He walked one and struck out one.
Austin Dill picked up the win, also throwing a complete game. He allowed just one unearned Hawk run like Manego. He walked three and struck out the same amount.
The lone Hawk run came in the second. Dean led-off with a walk and subsequently took second base. He went to third on a Kevin Hillenburg ground out and scored on a throwing error by catcher Peter Guastella, trying to pick him off.
The Rattlers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second and scored two in the sixth.
In the game James was 3-3 with two runs. He was 5-7 on the day, totaling three runs and two RBI. Corey McFadden was 3-7 with four runs and three RBI.
For the Hawks, Eric Gaines went 2-3 in game two while Justin Hoban and Tyler Winch were 2-4 in game one. Joel Gonzalez was a combined 2-5 while Dean, James Walls and Ken Richardson all picked up hits on the afternoon.
The same two teams finish the MEAC series tomorrow with a 1:00 pm start at Hawks Stadium.
