RALEIGH, N.C. – The Florida A&M Rattler Tennis team pulled off a stunning 4-3 upset of top-seeded and three-time defending champion South Carolina State here Saturday to reach Sunday’s championship match in the 2007 MEAC Men’s Tennis Championships at the Millbrook Tennis Center.
Sunday’s 11:30 a.m. title bout will pit Coach Carl Goodman’s Rattlers (17-10) against their longtime conference archnemesis, No. 2 Hampton University, whom they edged, 4-3 during the regular season.
Against S.C. State, the Rattlers lost the doubles point, but rallied back to win the number one, two, three and five positions in singles play.
Florida A&M’s Jarrel Williams won the match at the number five singles spot for the Rattlers by defeating SCSU’s Radek Pivonka, 0-6, 7-5 and 6-0.
In the other semifinal, No. 2 Hampton was victorious as they defeated the number three seed Norfolk State, 5-1. The Pirates captured the doubles’ point, as well as the number two, four, five and six spots in singles.
On Friday, the Rattlers blanked Bethune-Cookman, 4-0, in the quarterfinals.

Florida A&M (9-11) ends season with slim consolation loss to Hampton, 4-3
RALEIGH, N.C. (April 21) – The Florida A&M Women’s Tennis team had its’ Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference title hopes dashed by defending champion South Carolina State here Saturday morning, 4-0, in the 2007 MEAC Men’s Tennis Championships at the Millbrook Tennis Center.
The Lady Bulldogs will vie for their third consecutive title and fourth overall Sunday when they face No. 2 seed Bethune-Cookman in a repeat of last year’s final, at 9:00 a.m.
•The Lady Pirates of Hampton defeated Florida A&M, 4-3 in the third place consolation match on for the women Saturday afternoon.
•FAMU won their opening round match in Friday’s quarterfinals, ousting fifth-seeded Howard University, 4-2.
