NEW YORK (AP) _ Linebacker Lawrence Timmons heads to the Steel
City after being taken by the Pittsburgh Steelers with the 15th
overall selection in today's N-F-L draft.
Timmons finally became a starter as a junior last season after
apprenticing under 2006 first-round pick Ernie Sims. He finished
the year with 79 tackles, 18 for loss and five interceptions while
starting all 13 games for Florida State.
Timmons also appeared in all 12 games as a freshman and saw
enough action as a sophomore to record 36 tackles and three sacks.
The six-one, 234-pound Timmons takes advantage of his
outstanding physical skills to be a disruption on defense. He has a
quick burst and the strentgh to make big plays in the opposing
backfield. He reads and reacts quickly, making him valuable in
pass-rushing situations. Timmons is able to shed blocks and make an
impact on the perimeter.
He has the athletic ability to become an immediate force in the
N-F-L as long as his inexperience doesn't trip him up. He started
just one season with the Seminoles.
