FAMU Baseball Sweep Doubleheader at Coppin St.

HANOVER, Md. (April 28) - Darryl Evans drove in seven runs and batted 6-for-7 on the day to help Florida A&M defeat winless Coppin State, 14-1 and 16-0 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday at Joe Cannon Stadium.

The Rattlers (12-32, 8-6 in MEAC) moved into a three-way tie for third place in the MEAC with idle Norfolk State and North Carolina A&T (8-6). A&T split a doubleheader Saturday at Delaware State.

The Eagles fell to 0-38 and 0-14 in league play.

FAMU won both games in five innings, due to the league’s 10-run mercy rule, out-hitting Coppin State, 34-5 over the course of the doubleheader.

In the opener, FAMU scored in every inning but the fifth, crossed a one run in every inning but the fifth, as Jared Jeffries led FAMU with four RBI.

He brought in two with a double to center field in the second, another with a double in the third, and the final on a fielder ’s choice in the fourth.

Adam Gordon went 3-for-3, with a run scored in the game and was also hit by a pitch. Evans, David James, and Anthony Mazzeo each notched two hits and drove in two runs, while Elvin Millan and Stanley Gnat had two hits each.

Cirilo Manego (4-5), struck out eight batters and walked four to earn his fourth win of the season after spending five innings on the mound.

In the nightcap, Evans batted 4-for-4 with five RBI and two doubles.

Jared Grace had a two-run home run in the third, finishing with two hits and three RBI.

Millan had a solo home run in the fifth, and also finished with two hits and two RBI. Mazzeo, Gordon, Gnat, and Corey McFadden also had two hits each in the game.

Austin Dill (4-2) struck out three, walked one, and allowed only two hits to earn the shutout victory.

CSU tallied five hits on the afternoon, three coming from Harry Williams. Williams batted 3-for-4 with a run scored and also was the starting pitcher in the nightcap. DeShawn Daniel doubled and Chris Roberts singled to round out the rest of the Eagles hits.
